چکیده

In a test of early genetic evaluation of the growth potential of 14 families of open-pollinated Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga rnenziesii [Mirb.] Franco), measures of growth and phenology of seedlings grown in a coldframe were correlated with height of saplings in evaluation plantations at 9, 12, and 15 years. Fifteen-year height was most strongly correlated with measures of seedling budset (r = -0.57), height (r = 0.54), and branchiness (r = -0.53). Seedling growth and phenology values generally were poorly correlated with seed weight; however, seedling-sapling correlations were related to seedling-seed weight correlations. Seedling-sapling correlations improved with sapling age from 9 to 15 years. FOR. ScI. 33(2):577-582. ADDITIONAL

Genetic Studies Involving Swiss Needle Cast

Three studies were analyzed this year that examined genetic aspects of Swiss needle cast (SNC) tolerance. Families sampled across the Siuslaw National forest showed differences in foliage health traits, but very little of the variation could be explained by environmental or climatic conditions at the parent tree location. Five test sites of the Nehalem series of progeny trials were measured for...

Early genetic testing of coastal Douglas-fir for Swiss needle cast tolerance1

The possibility of early testing coastal Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) for Swiss needle cast (SNC; caused by Phaeocryptopus gaeumannii (Rohde) Petrak) tolerance was investigated using 55 Douglas-fir families from western Oregon. Seedlings were inoculated with P. gaeumannii naturally in the field and were visually scored for a variety of SNC symptom traits (i....

Maturation in Douglas-fir: II. Maturation characteristics of genetically matched Douglas-fir seedlings, rooted cuttings and tissue culture plantlets during and after 5 years of field growth.

Seedlings, rooted cuttings from juvenile stock plants, and cotyledon-derived tissue culture plantlets were propagated from several coastal Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) full-sib families so that the rooted cuttings and plantlets were clonally identical. The stock types (seedlings, rooted cuttings and plantlets) were planted in the field in spring 1987. In fall 1991, after f...

The incidence of Swiss needle cast on Douglas-fir has increased significantly in recent years on the Oregon coast. Genetic variation in symptoms of disease infection, as measur- ed by foliage traits, was assessed in two series of progeny trials

The incidence of Swiss needle cast on Douglas-fir has increased significantly in recent years on the Oregon coast. Genetic variation in symptoms of disease infection, as measured by foliage traits, was assessed in two series of progeny trials to determine whether these “crown health” indicators were under genetic control and correlated with tolerance; tolerance being continued growth in the pre...
